DESCRIPTION:

This training will cover the clinical features of newborn prenatal substance exposure, contextualizing addiction through a trauma lens and treatment approaches for parents struggling with Substance Use Disorder.

ABOUT THE TRAINER

Karen Longenecker, MA, LCSW, IMH-III is a clinical social worker and most recently

was the Integrated Care Senior Program Manager at the University of New

Mexico’s Center for Development and Disability. Prior to her role at UNM, she obtained

a Masters in Latin American Studies and conducted research in Chile on reproductive

health policy, women’s health initiatives and political and cultural influences impacting

women’s access to reproductive health care. She also has a Masters in Social Work

from New Mexico State University. Karen has diverse experience in a variety of infant

mental health settings and early childhood interventions including her background in

home visiting, developmental care in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at UNM

Hospital, early intervention with the FOCUS program and as the lead behavioral health

clinical in an integrated care medical clinic serving families impacted by addition. She

obtained her endorsement in Infant Mental Health Level III from the New Mexico

Association for Infant Mental Health in 2015. She also co-taught the “Foundations to

Infant Mental Health” seminar course for professionals who are initiating professional

training in Infant Mental Health work. Karen is trained and rostered in Child Parent

Psychotherapy (CPP) and is also a national trainer for the Facilitating Attuned

Interactions (FAN) model of parent engagement for direct service professionals and

supervisors of early childhood programs.
